Weddings at Mount Vernon Place Church

Just imagine your wedding in one of the most beautiful sanctuaries in the heart of Baltimore.  Listed as a National Landmark building, it is considered the finest example of Gothic Revival architecture in the city.  We are located near many popular reception venues like:  The Peabody Institute Library, the Walter’s Art Gallery, the Engineer’s Club, the Maryland Club, and Belvedere ballrooms.  Guests can often stay within the same block at the Peabody Court Hotel.  We are located on the circle with the Washington Monument and the Mt. Vernon Parks, where most wedding parties come to get photos regardless of where they hold the ceremony.

Mount Vernon Place Church also has a small chapel, known as Bosley Chapel. The chapel seats about 40 people.  The fee for use of the chapel is $750.00. Music for both the sanctuary and chapel will be an additional charge.

So here are some FAQ’s to consider:

1. What does it cost?
The fee for use of the sanctuary, including a rehearsal, is $2000 (two thousand dollars). The fee for the pastor, counseling, and organist are additional.  Persons who have been active members of Mt. Vernon Place UMC for at least a two-year prior to the wedding date do receive a discount.

2. Do you have to be a member of the church or a United Methodist?
No.  The church is available to anyone who desires a Christian worship celebration in the United Methodist tradition for marriage.  Use of the church by non-members is at the discretion of and after consultation with the pastor.

3. Can other pastors and/or denominations be involved?
Yes.  At the invitation of the MVPUMC pastor, other pastors may be involved or assist.

4. What about counseling?
All couples will have counseling with the pastor, at least two sessions.  Appointments are scheduled according to the pastor’s and your schedule.

5. What about music?
All music, including outside guest soloists and musicians must be coordinated with the church Director of Music and or the church office.  Our 3,900 pipe custom built Moeller Organ has a majestic power of its own and is available.

6. Is the church air conditioned?
No.  … And you know August in Baltimore can get a bit sticky.  However, we have fans and can keep it short!

7. Is the church handicapped accessible?
No, regrettably.  We are seeking a creative solution to our land-locked difficulty.

8. What about parking?
Built for “horse and buggy” days, we have only on street parking available.  However, there are a number of public and private pay lots near by.  Valet parking can often be arranged through nearby reception locations if held there.  The office can give you a list of locations.  We strongly discourage obtaining any official “no parking” permits from the City of Baltimore for any spaces in the block in front of the church or on Charles Street. The church is part of Mount Vernon neighborhood life, and we want to respect our neighbors.  Arrangements can be made for parking in front of the Church for limos, busses or for persons with disabilities.  Please contact the office.

9. What about flowers and decorations?
No tape, adhesive, wire, staples, tacks or fixtures of any kind may be used in the nave or chancel.  This means bows, flowers, banners, etc. may not be attached in any manner to the woodwork, columns or pews other than tied with nonabrasive ribbon.  All of the exterior is restored from the original 1872 period and must be preserved. There are no exceptions.
Candlelight services may be held. The church only provides 2 brass candelabras with 14 candles.  Free standing brass candlesticks with globes for the pews will need to be rented at the bride’s/groom’s expense.  If using a “Unity Candle,” they must be provided by the bride and groom as well.
No confetti, rice, birdseed, flower petals, etc. may be used inside or outside of the building. This is for your safety and the protection of church property. It is necessary for you to share this information with your guests.  No arrangements can be made for bringing wedding dresses/suits to the church overnight, in the event you select to dress at the church.

10. What about the license?
You will need to secure a Baltimore City marriage license.

Having read and agreed to all guidelines above, to secure a date for the use of the church, a deposit of 50% must be paid at contract signing.  The initial deposit fee is full refundable up to ninety (90) days before the wedding date.  No refund is made less than ninety (60) days of the wedding date.  The completed form with deposit must be returned to us within 30 days in order to reserve the date.  The full balance is due no less than thirty (30) days before the wedding.  You will find the form which you may print here.
