Witness and Serving

Mission: To proclaim the gospel of Christ to the community in which Mt. Vernon Place Church is located; to articulate and demonstrate the relevance of the Word in daily life and living; to develop witnessing strategies for the church family;  to structure a witnessing ministry that reflects the social, economic and moral values and discipline inherent in the gospel of Christ.

To structure activities of service for nurturing all members of the church family, and assure an appropriate sense of support to their common life; to design programs for service to those in the community outside the church family who look at Mount Vernon Place Church as a spiritual resource, and as a source of support as they struggle with crises in their lives.

Programs:

  • Carpenter’s Kitchen – Provides meals on Saturdays to low income and homeless people.
  • Susanna Wesley House – Support their mission of providing housing to homeless women and their dependent children.
  • Good Buy Shop – Provides low cost items to members of the community and funds for the church.
  • Open Church – The Church is open for visitors on two Saturdays a month from April to November.  The Church is also open during the Flower Mart, Book Fair and the lighting of the Washington Monument.
  • Homecoming Sundays – A special Homecoming Service is held every three years. We invite special guests and former members and clergy to join us for worship.
  • Pantry Donations – We invite people to donate food items to be distributed to needy people who come by the church door.
Congregational Care – We send cards to first-time visitors. We support keeping in touch with members of the congregation who are ill, homebound or have special needs through a listing in the church bulletin. We also encourage remembering them through prayer, cards and visits.
